Ion channels are plasma proteins present in all types of cells. Ion channels determine membrane potentials and cause electrical excitability in nerve and muscle cells, and secretion and absorption of electrolytes in epithelial cells. Because of diverse physiological functions, their genetic mutations causes fatal disorders.
In this lecture, types of ion channels will be introduced as well as diseases associated with channel mutation. Especially, structures of channels and pathology due to the dysfunction of channels will be discussed in detail. Furthermore, treatment of diseases caused by channelopathy will also be discussed.
