Prof. Yun-Sang Lee
Field of research
Nanomedicine, Albumin nanoplatfrom, Liposome, Radiochemistry, Theranostics
Introduction to the lab
This research laboratory is affiliated with the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Seoul National University College of Medicine. The laboratory focuses on the development of radiopharmaceuticals based on radioactive isotope-based radiopharmaceutical chemistry. They have established a technology platform for the creation of various radiolabeled compounds that enable PET, SPECT, MRI, CT, and optical imaging. The laboratory also possesses a fundamental technology for the production of radiopharmaceuticals with diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities using a radioactive isotope-labeled nanoplatform based on click chemistry reactions.

The radiopharmaceuticals developed in this laboratory are essential not only for evaluating various inflammatory diseases, metabolic disorders, and brain function, including tumor detection, but they are also widely used in disease-targeted treatments. Collaborative research with medical scientists and radiopharmacists from the Department of Nuclear Medicine at Seoul National University Hospital has led to numerous completed and ongoing clinical trials.

Furthermore, the first radiopharmaceutical developed in this laboratory, the albumin nanoplatform, has demonstrated safety. Through surface modification of albumin, it allows for the regulation of in vivo half-life and tissue distribution, enabling targeted diagnostics and treatments. The second radiopharmaceutical, the liposome nanoplatform, offers efficient drug delivery through homogeneous size control of liposomes and drug encapsulation.

In addition to these developments, ongoing research in nanomedicine at this laboratory includes the development of contrast agents using iron oxide nanoparticles and the creation of immunoreaction-based nanopharmaceuticals using antibodies. These research efforts involve collaboration among professors, graduate students, and researchers specializing in radiochemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and experimental animal medicine.
